There is a very common, and far too often unspoken lingering effect of combat that plagues a large majority of veterans; survivor guilt
-
This deeply unsettling feeling that we are unworthy of living, happiness, or inner peace
-
With nauseating veteran suicide statistics of 20+ of our brothers and sisters choosing to end their lives every day, we MUST start talking about this shit
-
Every single veteran I know has lost someone close to them in combat
-
As a PJ, I was witness to thousands of individuals staring vacant eyed and confused as we recovered the remains of their fallen brothers and sisters
-
We would fly away, and leave the ground teams to regroup in the aftermath; sometimes without 10 or more of their comrades
-
Those spared in the fighting would be expected to pick up immediately and return to the mission
-
As the hours, days, and months progressed, it would continue; more fallen, more traumatic injury, more heartache
-
Eventually, we ALL have the same thought; ‘why do we live, while they die?’
-
For some, this feeling never subsides, and a permanent decision is made
-
For others, a dark filter is cast over daily life; happiness and solace are deemed to be reserved for others
-
There is a way to soften this internal blade that cuts away at the core of our being
-
The practice of yoga is a journey of self exploration; a controlled environment to discover what is holding us back
-
By learning to control the body and breath, we connect neurological pathways and learn to identify destructive thoughts
-
By softening our internal body and finding flexibility, we allow these thoughts and emotions to rise, and consciously choose to release their hold on our psyche
-
Over time, through practice and reflection, the feeling softens
-
A vigorous physical practice stirs all the bullshit up, followed by a calming and grounding exploration of sensation; all are controlled by conscious breathing
-
YOU are deserving of happiness and peace; your fallen brothers and sisters would wish that upon you if there were standing by your side in this moment
-
We need to insulate our struggling brothers and sisters. Not isolate
One day, you'll know as I do, there is a difference between knowing the path and walking the path.
